The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not mindfulness and interpersonal anxiety played a mediating role in the association between actual-ideal self-discrepancies and interpersonal relationship ability. For this purpose, a survey on actual-ideal self-discrepancies, mindfulness, interpersonal anxiety and interpersonal relationship ability was administered to 324 undergraduates at 5 universities in Seoul and Gangwondo. The data was analyzed using structural equation model. The findings were as follows. First, actual-ideal self-discrepancies showed a significant negative relationship with mindfulness, interpersonal relationship ability and positive relationship with interpersonal anxiety. Second, Mindfulness and interpersonal anxiety mediated the association between actual-ideal self-discrepancies and interpersonal relationship ability in a sequential manner. And actual-ideal self-discrepancies affected directly interpersonal relationship ability. This findings suggest that reducing actual-ideal self-discrepancies and facilitating the mindfulness helps to improve interpersonal relationship ability in counseling session for students with low interpersonal relationship ability in counseling session.
